Recognising the importance of professional human
resource in tourism industry, the Department of
Tourism came into existence in 1976, which later
has been renamed as “Centre for Mountain Tourism &
Hospitality Studies” (CMTHS). The centre is
maintained by Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal
University as per Uttarakhand University Act 1973
Section 44 and is an operational arm of university
with internal autonomy.
Since its
inception the centre has worked ceaselessly in
the area of Hospitality & tourism, providing the
industry firstly- the information through various
research papers, journals & publications, Secondly
– the methods & techniques, through various
seminars, conferences & trainings and Lastly – The
most important the trained human resource to lead
the industry.
Besides
the interactive lectures, which fill the students
with the knowledge, the training in different
organs of Hospitality & Tourism Industry satisfies
the zeal for practical feel. Ex students of this
centre are working in national & International
hospitality organisations, playing a significant
role in leading airlines, resorts, hotels & other
tourism associations.
The
centre has a line of experienced & trained
pedagogue, which are assisted by a rich visiting
faculty, consisting of professionals from the
leading organisations. The centre is involved in
every field of Hospitality Management as it holds
seminars, conferences, short-term programmes &
training and also manages a fleet of Twenty Three
Tourist Guest Houses located on Badri – Kedar
Yatra Route. Further the centre runs University
Guest House, publishes Journals & Books and
organises a large number of Adventure Tourism
Activities along with imparting the students with
knowledge of the Tourism Industry.

The centre came into being as department of tourism (with post graduate Diploma in Tourism and Pilgrimage Studies).

Master in tourism (MTA, 2 year full time) introduced, making the centre second in Asia to start a course in tourism at master degree.

Department renamed as Centre for Mountain Tourism and Hospitality Studies (CMTHS)[as per directions of executive council of the university meet on 25-11-98 and 29-11-99, subsequently Chancellor of HNB Garhwal University’s letter no. 12303/G.S/2001]. |

Nomenclature of MTA changed into MBA in Tourism.

AICTE approved Bachelor of Hotel Management & Catering Technology (BHM&CT) introduced as 4-year full time course. |
